Connecticut’s STD rates are low compared to the rest of the country, but New Haven had 1,125 chlamydia diagnoses, 24 syphilis diagnoses, and 260 gonorrhea diagnoses in 2016. Health officials blame insufficient sexual knowledge among young people, but also acknowledge that better testing methods could account for the rise rate of diagnosis.
As of 2017, there were 1,403 people in New Haven living with HIV or AIDS, most of them over 50, but of the 170 people diagnosed in 2017, 70 were between 20 and 29.
