State residents should be aware of a number of statistics surrounding STDs in the area. Chlamydia and gonorrhea rates have been on the rise over the past five years. While the numbers for some STDs are below national averages, the rate of increase is enough to warrant concern. These rates are of particular concern to teens and young adults.
Rates among women aged 20-29 are of concern. Young adult women should be aware of the risks of having unsafe sex. They should also be aware of the numerous testing centers across the state that is available to them. Without adequate testing or education, these rates will continue to rise for young adults.
It is also worth mentioning that gonorrhea rates are of concern in the state. Strangely, rates are higher among men than women. This is atypical when looking at STD data and could be indicative of the beginnings of a crisis. If you are a young adult man, it is imperative that you seek proper testing and education.
The rate of increase for chlamydia is also of concern. While the upward trend isn’t severe, there are still significantly more cases in 2015 compared to 2011. Increased sex education can help state residents combat these rising rates.
Adolescents and young adults are often shy to seek information about testing. You can help combat the stigma by being proactive about sexual health and STD clinics. The resources are readily available, it’s up to you to take the initiative. Don’t hesitate!
As previously mentioned, STDs are significantly more prominent in the younger members of the Maine community. Despite making up a small portion of the state’s population, 15-24 year-olds represent a disproportionate amount of STD diagnoses. It is only through better sexual education that you can prevent younger members of the community from contracting and spreading these diseases.
Young women are particularly at-risk for STDs. Because young women make up the future of the state’s community, it is important that quality sexual education is available in area public schools. As recently as 2012, schools in the state set new goals for their sexual education programs. These goals included benchmarks and minimum requirement for age-appropriate sexual education.
If more teenagers and young adults are aware of the testing centers in their areas, STD rates will continue to fall state wide.
Regular Herpes testing in Maine is one of the most effective ways to stop the virus from spreading. Regular HIV testing in Maine is also important, and the simple procedure is the only way to positively detect the disease.
Analyzing demographics is a key way health professionals are able to target their awareness efforts. The state is home to a number of universities, and college populations are known to have higher rates of STD transmittance. With large concentrations of young people living together the risk for contracting a STD increases significantly.
Chlamydia is most commonly reported in females across the state. It is also more prevalent in Caucasians than other ethnicities.
Perhaps the most surprising statistic with regard to demographics across the state is the syphilis rate. While most diseases are much more common in young people, syphilis diagnoses were even across multiple age demographics. While the numbers aren’t particularly high, this is alarming information. Syphilis is a serious STD that can cause a number of life altering complications. It is important that at-risk individuals across multiple age brackets seek regular testing.
Without access to affordable treatment or sexual health education, it’s difficult for communities to keep themselves safe and healthy.
Residents and visitors won’t have any problems keeping themselves occupied in this beautiful New England state. Home to stunning coastline and majestic pine forests, it also has a high STD rate. This means that regular STD testing is important, if you want to continue to have good sexual health. If you don’t want to wait in the long lines at the STI clinics, there is another way to get tested. With one simple phone call you can schedule confidential STD testing, and only spend a few minutes at a nearby lab. This way you still have plenty of time to explore “The Pine Tree State.”
