Ogden, Utah isn’t your typical mountain town. With so many funky attractions, shopping, and an active nightlife scene, dating—and “hook-ups”—is at an all-time high.
The health department of the Ogden area track the four major sexually transmitted diseases: HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, primary and secondary syphilis.
Officials were alarmed at the rate that these STDs climbed over the last few years.
The 2017 numbers are in. Chlamydia cases rose to a rate of 390.7 out of 100,000 people with most being found in women. Gonorrhea was at 99.4 per 100,000 people and again more cases were found to be in women than in men. Syphilis rates for 2017 are at 3.7 per 100,000 residents of Weber County. Chlamydia and syphilis are often asymptomatic, so regular testing is really the best thing the people of the Ogden area can do for their sexual health other than limiting their number of sexual partners and using condoms.
For affordable HIV screening in your area, the Northern Utah HIV-AIDS Project offers testing at their location on 24th street. Otherwise your best bet is Planned Parenthood on Harrison Boulevard. They offer tests for chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes, syphilis, and more. If you don’t have symptoms, they welcome all walk-ins during normal business hours which you can find on their website. Some STI testing may be covered by your insurance, so be sure to bring that info with you when you go. For free testing opportunities, check out local events offered through Weber State University (also on Harrison Boulevard). They may have some services scheduled, especially in April which is STD awareness month.

The abstinence based sex education classes found in most area high schools are simply not effective at preventing the spread of these diseases. Many students do not fully realize that sexually activity does not always involve intercourse, and even “heavy petting” can still result in one of the participants contracting a STD.
The biggest contributing factor remains the lack of STI clinics in the city’s various neighborhoods. Budget cuts to health care have forced many community centers to close.
