Introduction

What are the STI test options in Norfolk,VA?

STD rates in Norfolk have reached pretty severe heights. However, STD rates have seen rises over the past seven years, which is the story being told across the nation at present.

Many STDs can infect the body without symptoms, so it’s important to understand the risks and seek out regular testing for all those who are sexually active.

The city of Norfolk ranked as high as the 5th most sexually diseased city in the United States according to the data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The city reported over 4,000 cases of new STDS that year.

To combat this growing health concern such organizations as the Virginia Department of Health offer services that provide education, support, and preventative measures. Some organizations cater to at-risk populations like the LGBT community, and will go so far as to provide transportation. Low cost services are offered throughout the area to those who are uninsured or underinsured and if you qualify free STD testing is possible.

Testing facilities are scattered across the city. The Urban League of Hampton Roads on Goff Street and the Virginia Department of Health on Southampton Avenue are just two of the many options throughout the Norfolk area.

Sexual Health Education

STD Testing and Sexual Health Education in Norfolk, VA

Preventing sexually transmitted diseases starts with proper education programs in the classrooms, and the city of Norfolk does have basic guidelines in place for its school system to follow.

While students are taught the basics of reproduction in their health classes, and some are even required to form partnerships to raise a “baby egg”, this still does not address the dangers associated with sexually transmitted diseases. These classes are designed to explain the changes taking place in the body during puberty, and to promote abstinence as an effective way to prevent pregnancy and STDs.

While abstaining from sex is the best way to prevent pregnancy, it cannot protect students from all STDs. Not all sexually transmitted diseases are spread only through intercourse, and not everyone infected immediately displays noticeable symptoms. Some STDs, like Herpes, can be easily spread through casual contact and HIV often doesn’t display any recognizable signs until it has turned into full-blown AIDS.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Demographics in Norfolk, VA

The city of Norfolk has a unique demographical makeup thanks in part to the large naval base. The constant flood of sailors coming and going from the base to the city is contributing to the STDs reported each year, but this is not the only factor that is causing the rate of sexually transmitted diseases to rise.

While the Navy is taking steps to help educate its personnel about the dangers of STDs and beginning to stress the importance of regular testing, the city has yet to do the same.

Health officials are finding it difficult to reach all of the city’s residents, and there is also a lack of community centers that offer affordable testing. The lower income neighborhoods in particular are the most affected by the lack of health care.

Many lower income families simply cannot afford regular STD testing, and the lack of education in the public school system has makes it difficult for residents to understand the importance of this health screening.

Stereotypes are also playing a role in the city’s high STD rates, especially among African American men. Many are simply too embarrassed to be seen at a local clinic, and this is also true for older Caucasian men.
