The levels of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in Bethesda, MD, have been shooting up over the past few years. According to a press release by the Montgomery County health officials, the number of STDs reported in 2017 was higher than that recorded in 2016.
The release further revealed that there were 4,029 cases of chlamydia in the county, in 2017; 2686 of them were females. With 726 gonorrhoea diagnoses during the same year, there was a 29% increase in the STD’s rate. Almost 70% of these cases were men, while women covered nearly 30%.
2017 saw Montgomery County record fewer cases of syphilis than those of all other STDs; even though the increase rate was much higher. There were 144 diagnoses of early syphilis, an 85% increase from 2016, and 50 reported infections of primary and secondary syphilis, which was more than a 50% increase from the previous year.
