Communities in Providence County, including the city of Smithfield, Rhode Island, saw a steady increase in the number of newly reported STD cases from 2013 to 2017.
State reports show that chlamydia rates in the county rose by more than 16 percent during this five-year period, as the number of new chlamydia cases reported jumped from 3,401 cases in 2013 to 3,968 cases in 2017. Syphilis rates from Providence County also doubled from 2013 to 2017, as the number of new syphilis cases reported increased from 54 cases in 2013 to 108 cases in 2018.
According to the CDC, the number of HIV cases in Providence County increased by 20 percent from 2016 to 2017, as the number of new HIV cases reported jumped from 53 cases in 2016 to 64 cases in 2017.
